Prologue
From coaching them over and over, my chest was exploding and I was at
the top of my volume-metric range. No doubt the two, three or four sections
nearby could also hear my instructions and had a pretty good idea of what I
was trying to do. But I didn’t have the time, the energy, or the lung power to
train all the other sections. So I went with the first three.
Fifth inning! We’re at bat! The groundwork was laid. My three sections
were primed and ready to go. It was just a matter of waiting for a lull in the
game for us to begin. If there were too many distractions on the field, it
would have been a tough time starting. So I kept waiting and reminding those
sections of their responsibilities. “Do you know what to do? Do you
understand when to boo?” As I waited during the intervals for the right
moment, I made jokes and coached the fans to stay alert for a break in the
